What is prenatal yoga and who can benefit from it?
During pregnancy the body goes through many changes in as little as forty-two-weeks. Due to these changes there are many complications and discomforts. Yoga is a gentle practice which helps build strength, offer relief and create connection to the mother and their infant. You do not need to have a previous yoga practice as prenatal yoga is recommended for anyone.
The Benefits of Prenatal Yoga
Alleviates discomforts – Many physical changes come with pregnancy, including but not limited too carpel tunnel, sciatica, backpain, hip pain, heart burn and indigestion. The movements and strength building from the postures can support and alleviate these and many other physical problems.
Builds physical strength –Touching your toes is not required for birth. Yoga teaches students to engage and isolate important muscles; including the pelvic floor, thighs and glutes. Knowing how and spending time being physically active with prenatal yoga helps with discomfort, builds stamina and aids with the birthing process.
Helps with mental health – Yoga is not just about the poses, or asanas. Many scientists and doctors are finding important benefits in mindfulness. Yoga teaches breathing techniques for anxiety, pain and fears, coping techniques, and connection with self and baby.

What makes postnatal yoga different? In just under forty-two weeks a woman’s body moves their entire intestines, gains an upward of twenty-pounds and shifts physically to support their baby. Once mom has been cleared from her doctor, it can be confusing navigating what comes next. Postnatal yoga is aimed to create a strong and relegable foundation while mom gains strength and stamina after-baby. Poses and sessions keep in mind the important factors of a mothers transitioned mental and physical body allowing for her to ease back gently.
The Benefits of Postpartum yoga
Alleviates discomforts and builds strength – Many physical changes come during, and after delivery. The movements, poses and strength building from the yoga postures can support and alleviate these and many other physical problems. We also isolate important information and support for the postpartum body such as pelvic floor health and support for your diastasis.
Helps with mental health – Postnatal Yoga can be used to navigate and support baby blues, postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety.
Builds confidence – After delivering a newborn, your body can begin to feel like a foreign territory. By choosing an exercise such as yoga, your facilitator and you can begin to explore the physical and mental changes and begin building a strong and positive relationship. Over time yoga helps women to reconnect with themselves emotionally and physically helping them rebuild their confidence.
